Summary: Long has our annual meeting run and Audrey Forbes has put her wonderful stamp on it. She did all of the work to put together a great, full day time. We had resident and guest lectures. There was a sandwich bar for lunch and reminiscing. The cocktail hour and banquet could not have been held in a better place.
The evening events unfolded as they often do. Ose Aburime, a second year, took the podium and showed off his video editing skills. He had gone around to the different faculty and staff and had them do a little dance. Ose and strung them together and put music to them. There was a lot of laughter at seeing some people in and some people out of character! After Ose finished his little show Azam Qureshi rose to the occasion with a funny, impromptu rundown of his experiences with the department sometimes poking fun at himself. Dr. Ulrich, not realizing that Azam was speaking only for himself jumped in at the end only to find out that Adam Luka and then Scott Cole, too, had some words for a lot of the people they had worked with. Drs. Nussbaum and Ulrich added their 2 cents with Nussbaum especially giving his words of advice to the departing seniors. Some senior gifts were given out and the evening closed up.
Our residents spoke first and this was the first year when we considered resident published case reports to meet the annual scholarly activity requirement. Six of the 9 did these with 3 retaining the more traditional approach. The alumni association gave awards for both first and second places in each of these categories. Dr. Bains gave a great summary of the recent treatments for age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Watsky outlined the wondering pathway that takes research from bench to the bedside. He even included pictures from his pre-collegiate days when he was doing shark research. Curiously upside-down sharks just relax! I didn't know that. Dr. Radhakrishnan gave a very practical talk on angle closure glaucoma and the manner in which it is classified in 2017.
