NEED COURSE ENROLLMENT HELP? Contact Rika Schoenke

The Center for Instructional Innovation is partnering with Information Technology to offer free training to all Augusta University faculty starting June 8 to prepare them for fall teaching during this time of uncertainty.

The training consists of three one-week units offered fully online. Each unit will be offered twice during the summer.

More information about each topic can be found here.

UNIT 1: TEACHING AND TECHNOLOGY TOOLKIT (JUNE 8-12 OR JUNE 22-26)

This unit will be delivered through five 90-minute webinars (one per day), each covering a different topic. All webinars will be recorded for later viewing. Faculty should expect to spend 7.5 hours on the webinars plus however much time they need to apply what they learned to their fall courses. In this unit, faculty will learn about:

  • The AU-approved digital tools available for instruction (e.g. D2L, WebEx, Microsoft Teams, and Echo 360).
  • New ways for how they can efficiently and creatively deliver instruction, increase student engagement, and assess learning in a hybrid or online environment.

UNIT 2: ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF HYBRID & ONLINE DELIVERY (JUNE 15-19 OR JULY 13-17)

This training will be delivered asynchronously through D2L with real-time faculty support via Microsoft Teams. Faculty should expect to spend about 10 hours going through the course content plus however much time they need to apply what they learned to their fall courses. In this unit, faculty will learn about:

  • Converting face-to-face components for hybrid and online delivery (e.g. syllabi, lectures, assignments and class discussions).
  • Preparing courses for a quick transition to flipped, hybrid and online formats.

UNIT 3: INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES FOR HYBRID & ONLINE LEARNING (JULY 6-10 OR JULY 20-24)

This training will be delivered asynchronously through D2L with real-time faculty support via Microsoft Teams. Faculty should expect to spend about 10 hours going through the course content plus however much time they need to apply what they learned to their fall courses. In this unit, faculty will learn about:

  • Instructional design and delivery strategies to promote student engagement in hybrid and online courses.
  • Accessibility and usability in online education.

Faculty can take any or all units in any order. They are encouraged, however, to take all three units in order (1 through 3).

Additional Pay Available for 10-month Contract Faculty

All faculty on a 10-month contract are eligible to apply for additional pay of up to $1,500 per training unit subject to qualification (up to $4,500 total if they complete all three units). Total earnings for the summer cannot exceed 33 percent of a faculty’s regular compensation, according to USG policy. Summer compensation includes items such as summer teaching contract, institutional support for research, and additional pay for training.

Deadline to apply for additional pay is noon Friday, June 5. There will be a second opportunity to apply for it for the sessions in July. Faculty who are approved for it will receive it with their July paycheck. All faculty who accept a stipend are committing themselves to applying what they’ve learned to one or more courses they will teach in the fall. Participation will be monitored.

Although 12-month faculty are not eligible for a stipend, they are encouraged to participate in all training units.

No registration to participate in this training is necessary. All faculty will be automatically enrolled and will have access to the three training units in D2L when the sessions start. Faculty can access the training, called Teaching Blended & Online Courses, in D2L.

The Center for Instructional Innovation will give an online teaching certification to all AU faculty who complete all three units.
