Combining the technical skill and knowledge of both dentistry, medicine and basic science, our program consists of Oral Biology, Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology training to prepare students in the diagnosis and management of disorders and abnormalities of the oral and maxillofacial region.
We provide a center for teaching, scholarly activity, and health care for patients ranging from newborns to the elderly. Our department also offers a broad range of exceptional opportunities for innovative basic and clinical research.
Charged with teaching the Basic and Clinical Science curricula at the pre- and postdoctoral levels, our faculty are uniquely qualified holding PhD. degrees in a range of basic science disciplines as well as degrees in dentistry, medicine and pharmacy.
Our faculty are engaged in research activities consistent with the research emphasis of Augusta University. This is composed of not only oral/dental-relevant areas including adhesive dentistry, bone biology, periodontal wound healing/regeneration, salivary gland and biomaterials, but also Augusta University-wide areas of focus including renal and cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes, and cancer. Thus, the Oral Biology and Diagnostic Sciences faculty regularly publishes in a wide range of dental and medical journals. It is noteworthy that the many of our faculty members hold joint appointments in the College of Graduate Studies which is highly conducive to their collaborative work with Augusta University faculty in the Colleges of Medicine, Allied Health and Nursing.
The Department of Oral Biology and Diagnostic Sciences at Augusta University is as unique as the specialties housed in it. Our program provides both a large and well-balanced clinical load, as well as an excellent research environment. We have a comprehensive department and training program that covers all present and evolving aspects of oral medicine, pathology and radiology. Supporting our program is a regionally renown Medical Center with an excellent reputation for its clinical programs and for its dedication and success in research.
The mission of the Department of Oral Biology and Diagnostic Sciences is to provide
preeminent education, excellent and compassionate patient care, and foster innovative research in all
aspects of diagnostics sciences including oral medicine, pathology and radiology.
Our mission is consistent with the tripartite mission of the Augusta University (Augusta University) which includes Teaching, Research/Scholarly Activity, and Service.
The Oral Biology and Diagnostic Sciences faculty serves on college- and Augusta University-wide committees. In addition, they contribute to the profession by serving on the editorial boards of dental and medical journals, serving as peer reviewer for a variety of scientific journals, and serving on study sections including the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association. In addition, they are active in professional associations and learned societies including the American Dental Association, American Dental Education Association, American Physiological Society and the American Heart Association.
