Dr. Howell earned his medical degree in 1973 and completed his General Surgery residency in 1978, both at the Medical College of Georgia. He completed a Pediatric Surgery Research Fellowship followed by a Pediatric Surgery Clinical Fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania in 1982. Dr. Howell is currently Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics. He is an Ad Hoc Reviewer for a number of journals including the Journal of Pediatric Surgery and The American Surgeon. He is the Co-Medical Director of the Children’s Hospital of Georgia and is Co-Director of the Perioperative Executive Team of Georgia Regents Medical Center. He has been the Surgeon-in-Chief of the Children’s Hospital of Georgia since its opening in l998 and played a key role in obtaining funding for the Children’s Hospital. Dr. Howell and Kanto (former Chair of Pediatrics) pioneered the Children’s Hospital of Georgia ECMO program here in 1985 and it continues to this day having saved the lives of over 500 children. Dr. Howell also was the President/CEO of the MCG Physicians Practice Group in 1991-2. Dr. Howell was named the Interim Chair of Surgery in November, 2010 and the permanent Moretz/Mansberger Distinguished Chair of Surgery in February, 2011. Since that time he has reorganized the Department of Surgery with the addition of an Acute Care Surgery Service and the integration of multiple key faculty into Service Lines in multiple areas. He has been successful in numerous faculty and Chair recruits as well as Service Line Directors. He actively participated in the development of the Digestive Health Center in conjunction with Drs. Madaio and Rao. He was Co-Campaign Director for the new $6 million, 23 room, Ronald McDonald House now located out the front door of the Children’s Hospital.
