Bio

Appointment Date: 1997

Dr. Lane was born in San Jose, California but spent her early years traveling with her family across the world while her dad was in the civil service. She grew up and received most of her secondary and collegiate education in Alabama. She received her Doctorate of Medicine from University of South Alabama in Mobile in 1988. She completed both her pediatric residency (1991) and pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at the University of Louisville (1994). She ran the Children’s Evaluation Center at the University of South Alabama from 1992 to 1994. Enthusiastic for academics and anxious to find leadership opportunities, she moved to Augusta, GA from Louisville along with her husband, Dale Schmacht, MD, PhD (surgical graduate of University of Louisville “97) in 1997.

Currently, Dr. Lane is a Professor of Emergency Medicine and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and serves as the Fellowship Director for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine program established in 2005. She is Medical Director and Service Chief for the Children’s Hospital of Georgia Emergency Department with an annual census of 30,000 patients. She has received multiple clinical teaching awards from resident trainees and medical students. She has contributed to a number of administrative task forces within the institution and oversees quality initiatives within the children’s emergency department and has overseen the development of both clinical and academic interdisciplinary initiatives. Dr. Lane is active in the local and state emergency medical services for children programs. She chairs the state committee on emergency medicine for the Georgia AAP and serves as the chapter’s liaison for disaster preparedness and serves on the national emergency medicine committee for the AAP. She is also a member of the Pediatric Health Improvement Coalition of Georgia. Dr. Lane’s research interests include pre-hospital care and disaster preparedness as well as quality in care and pediatric respiratory illnesses.
