Dr. Brian Miller explains treatment of schizophrenia-related insomnia
Insomnia affects up to half of people with schizophrenia and is thought to worsen the impact of their disease, including their risk of suicide. A new analysis of the antipsychotics these patients take indicates those who take clozapine have significantly fewer problems with insomnia.
Insomnia and suicide risk have been linked in schizophrenia, and clozapine is the only antipsychotic with a Food and Drug Administration indicator for reducing suicide risk, says Brian Miller, MD, psychiatrist and schizophrenia expert at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.
MCG investigators say it’s plausible that clozapine’s ability to essentially double patients’ ability to sleep versus other antipsychotics helps explain the reduced suicide risk. Insomnia has been found to generally worsen schizophrenia symptoms and complications from obesity to depression.

Dr. Amol Sharma shows how magnetic stimulation in the back can help diabetes-related stomach pain
Magnetic stimulation to a group of nerves in the back can improve the communication of the gut with the brain and correct a painful condition called diabetic gastroparesis. Scientists at the Medical College of Georgia received a grant for a three-year study on this treatment concept.

Dr. Danielle Mor studies how Parkinson's disease might start in the gut
Neuroscientist Danielle Mor, PhD, a is studying a tiny worm to explore the emerging theory that Parkinson’s disease starts in the gut. Mor, a faculty member in the Department of Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine at MCG, received a two-year $400,000 Early-Investigator Research Award from the U.S. Department of Defense, to look at how a toxic protein affects cognition in nematodes that have a digestive tract and nervous system similar to humans.
Parkinson’s disease is known to produce uncontrollable shaking, but also characterized by cognitive problems and gastrointestinal distresses like constipation.
