At the Family Medicine Clinic, residents experience strong clinical complexity. The FMC offers a basket of services for residents to learn including dedicated procedural clinics, integrated POCUS, gender affirmation clinic, Adolescent clinic, Sports Medicine Clinic, osteopathic manipulation clinic, integrated Behavioral Health assets, with Pharm D and social work embedded within clinic. These services coupled with a diverse patient population create a unique and dynamic learning environment for our residents.
The Institutional Ultrasound Center of Excellence offers Family Medicine residents an 18-month curriculum proving didactic training, hands-on ultrasound scanning labs and scanning rounds, and proficiency assessment and tracking. The goal is for every resident to have access to Point-of-Care Ultrasound training and the opportunity to develop life-long skills to advance their medical practice. Within the Family Medicine Clinic, residents will have access to ultrasound equipment where they can continue to develop their skills and learn to integrate ultrasound into the delivery of patient centered care.
The state-of-the-art simulation center provides immersive simulated clinical experiences using low- and high-fidelity mannequins, standardized patients, task trainers, and other hands-on technologies to create individual, group, and interprofessional learning opportunities. Family Medicine residents will participate in simulation activities quarterly.
What makes our program strong is that we have 2 Family Medicine only inpatient teams. Residents will develop strong bonds with their fellow residents. The medical complexity of our patients provides an excellent learning experience. We have FM and IM hospital faculty that love to teach and give our residents a wide perspective on inpatient medicine. Because of the inpatient experience, our residents feel more confident in the outpatient setting.
Our osteopathic program currently is accredited by the ACGME with Osteopathic Recognition (OR), demonstrating our commitment to osteopathic education. The program has a robust Osteopathic learning environment that encourages and enhances the knowledge and hands-on skills for our residents. All residents (MD and DO) integrate seamlessly and participate in resident led OMM lectures, in this way all our residents are familiar with OMT and understand the value and the potential benefit to our patients. Osteopathic recognition residents participate in quarterly osteopathic conferences that include evaluation of evidence-based literature, exam preparation, and skills training and assessment. Residents in clinics have one-on-one guidance by Osteopathic faculty to guide them in the care of patients and learn about incorporating OMT into office visits.
