Dr. E. Vanessa Spearman-McCarthy, an Augusta native, is a graduate of John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School, Spelman College, and the Medical College of Georgia. She completed her Residency training at the Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston, SC) in the Combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry Program, serving as Chief Resident in her last year.
Currently, she is the Associate Dean for Belonging and Inclusivity as well as an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. Her clinical duties include serving as the Senior Attending on the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service at Wellstar MCG Health (previously serving as Medical Director for 13 years) as well as practicing as an Outpatient General Internal Medicine Attending. She also serves as the Director for the MCG Student Educational Enrichment Program and the MCG Pre-Matriculation Program. She also serves as a faculty member in the MCG Pre-clerkship Curriculum. In addition to her administrative and clinical duties, she serves on various committees at the department, hospital, and university levels. Her dedication to clinical and educational missions have afforded her numerous awards and recognitions. Most recently she is the recipient of the 2023 MCG Faculty Senate Champion of Diversity Award, the 2023 MCG Department of Psychiatry Outstanding Clinical Faculty Member of the Year Award, the 2023 National Alumnae Association of Spelman College Hall of Fame Award, the 2023 Augusta University Advisor of the Year Award, 2022 American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) INSPIRE Award, the 2022 Association of Medicine and Psychiatry (AMP) President’s Award, the 2022 Academy of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry (ACLP) Special Recognition Award, the 2022 MCG Group on Women In Medicine and Science Leadership Award,, the 2022 AU Health Patient and Family Centered Care Partnership Award, and the 2022 Rosa T. Beard Debutante Club Society of Excellence—Rosa T. Beard Legacy Award.
When not engaged in clinical activities, she enjoys spending time with family, community
service, mentoring youth, and playing clarinet with the Augusta Concert Band.
