Assessment and Validation of Electronic Gas and Bloating Diary

Gas-related symptoms (GRS) such as abdominal bloating, flatulence, and belching are some of the most common gastrointestinal complaints reported by the general population. They are hallmark symptoms in patients with functional gut disorders like irritable bowel syndrome but have also been linked to conditions such as gut hypersensitivity, altered gut microbiota, and altered gut motility and SIBO. Our objective here is to improve documentation and accurate recording of patient-reported symptoms of gas, bloating and distension and other coexisting GI symptoms by utilizing a mobile phone application that interactively records pertinent symptoms. Such an electronic diary will allow us to collect data using objective scoring measures to track progress and obviate the need to rely on a patient's recall of symptoms that are usually flowed due to recall bias. The app will not only be useful in day-to-day clinical practice but also serve as a database for conducting larger population-based studies of food intolerance or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and/or therapeutic intervention. We will validate the APP against a paper form diary and evaluate its reproducibility and functionality and user-friendliness.
