The Washington Initiative is the first project in this ongoing partnership. During the Fall of 2020 and Spring of 2021, members of Augusta University, The Lucy Craft Laney Museum and Paine College will collaborate to host a commemorative event in honor of the lives and legacy of Drs. Justine and Isaiah “Ike” Washington. The commemoration will include presentations and remembrances chronicling the couples’ work and achievements throughout our local and regional community.

The event will showcase two legacy quilts commissioned by the Brown Sugar Stitchers, and a scholarship will be named after the Washingtons to benefit Augusta University freshman from the CSRA who are interested in reducing educational disparities among underrepresented communities.
The two identical legacy quilts, are designed to capture and reflect the essence of this dynamic couple’s community and civic engagement as well as their commitment to education. One of the quilts, housed on the Augusta University Summerville Campus will serve as an educational instrument, traveling within and around the community to teach about the Washingtons’ legacy. The other will be on perpetual display at the Lucy Craft Laney Museum. Each square of the quilt will pay tribute to the couples’ lifelong work in education and social causes.
