From the Vice President & CIO

Information Technology is crucial in equipping Augusta University with the necessary tools to solve problems and enhance efficiency and productivity. It lies at the heart of everything we do, empowering us to achieve our core objectives in teaching, research, daily operations, and more. Our mission would be unattainable without our reliance on technology.

Over the past year, we have embarked on several remarkable initiatives. Despite facing supply challenges and staffing shortages, we have triumphed. We officially opened our new Modular Data Center, doubling our storage capacity. Our IT Physical Security team secured our classrooms and exterior door access, ensuring our campus's and its community's safety. This Fall, we are excited to launch the new myAugusta platform, which facilitated AU Online and will now be available to all faculty, staff, and students, tailored to their needs.

This year, we will focus on safeguarding Augusta University’s email, devices, and systems. This commitment is particularly challenging given our shared IT services and infrastructure with WellStar MCG Health, necessitating heightened security measures beyond those typical of other research universities. However, we are ready to meet this challenge head-on.

I am grateful to my colleagues and leadership for their continued assistance and support as we strive to provide the most modern, secure, and collaborative IT environment for the AU community.

Door Access Controls

As of April 2024, classroom doors across both Summerville and Health Science campuses are now equipped with advanced access control systems.  IT Physical Security enhances building security across both campuses by installing and programming exterior door access control components and hardware. This project is scheduled for completion in October of 2024. Currently, we have secured 230 doors across both campuses.

Updating and Protecting Campus Devices

The Desktop Engineering and Technology Services team has diligently enhanced device management and security across our campus. AU IT can exercise greater control over the desktops and laptops connected to our network by updating devices and implementing advanced management programs. These efforts enable us to replace outdated, vulnerable devices and ensure we can enforce security policies, deliver timely software updates, and prevent unauthorized applications from compromising university systems.

Building a Strong Online Presence

This past year, the Web & Digital Services team has made significant strides in enhancing our online presence. One of our key achievements has been creating brand-new program pages for prospective students to explore different degree options. The team also migrated numerous college web pages to our new, user-friendly template. This transition improves the aesthetic appeal of our sites and enhances functionality and accessibility for all users. These improvements make it easy for students, parents, and staff to find the necessary information.
